Arun Ferreira released from jail

The district and sessions court of Gadchiroli on Wednesday granted bail to Mumbai-based alleged Maoist Arun Thomas Ferreira (40) who was arrested by the anti-naxalite squad in connection with a police-naxalite encounter in the district. Farreira, who was arrested along with senior naxalite leader Arun Satya Reddy alias Murali in Nagpur in 2007, was acquitted of 11 different cases, including a case of unlawful activities by the sessions court in Nagpur. However, whenever he was acquitted of one charge and was ordered release, the state police re-arrested him on fresh set of charges. He was booked by the Gadchiroli police…

February 2012

No, I did not get lost. True, it’s been some time since I posted a blog entry. No excuses either! After ages it seems, I expect to be in Mumbai between the 12th to the 15th of February 2012. During this brief period, I hope to visit Vinayala where Fr. Bulchand is resident. On the 14th of February, I plan to visit St. Stanislaus high School. Do not ask me why? I guess because it played such a big part in my childhood. Perhaps because so many of my memories are rooted there. Maybe I hope to meet old timers…

COMMUNITY COMPOSTING

Composting is one of the best ways you can reduce the amount of waste you are responsible for. It is the most effective and efficient way of returning Carbon to the soil. When Composting is done at source the benefits are multiplied several times. In the past year a few households, societies and institutions in Bandra have not had the need to use the daily BMC garbage trucks that contribute to the many landfills around Mumbai. What started off as devising a simple low cost method for conveniently composting food waste for one family on an experimental basis has now spread…

How I recall…

Since the last one or two years some of my companions from our days in the boarding, reached out to me. The first was Frank (is it the same one called affectionately ‘Butler’?). Then there was Joe D’Souza, John Carvallo, and now Philon. I guess we are all in our 60s. Joe D’Souza as I remember was affectionately called ‘Chintu’ and if memory serves me right, he was a good friend. John Carvallo was the studious one. He took his studies very seriously. And he was also a damn good hockey player. Then there was Philon who I recall was…

And you! Keep your mouth shut, you idiot!

I picked this YT-video from a Facebook post (thanks Lee!), that is evidently choreographed to drive home an anti-bullying message. https://web.archive.org/web/20210622143014if_/http://www.youtube.com/embed/MhYyAa0VnyY A great show, however the message is not so evident from the dance alone. So I decided to mash-up this with an article written by Editor-in-chief Trine Eilertsen at Bergens Tidende. I believe there is a fine line between a prank and what can escalate  to plain terror. I think it is worth making a point about of bullying and why it needs more attention. I believe bullying exists in the workplace too — but we probably learn this at school first!…

Who do you call? The caste busters!

Posted on
I would recommend reading this article “The caste busters” that appeared in New York Times recently (The article is based on a theme from the author’s book). What fascinated me, was the sense of ambition and ability that Misal demonstrates — to be able to exploit the medium of TV to its maximum. I wonder what social media and mobile broadband could do in the years to come. Besides Misal, it was also the sense of development and innovation emerging at the “bottom of the pyramid” — probably the place to watch for exciting business opportunities? It was the article’s…
