Master Ossie Pereira

Master Oswald (Ossie) Pereira

Tenure at St. Stanislaus: 1986-2007

Master Ossie PereiraMaster Oswald (Ossie) Pereira was born in Vasai on 20th April 1949.

He is the eldest of two brothers and a sister. He lives in Bandra with his wife Doris. He has a son and a daughter who live in Singapore. In 1970 Master Ossie started working in Kuwait where he spent the next 14 years. It was while working in Kuwait that he developed a love for teaching. He first was taught and then started teaching at the company he worked for.

Master Ossie completed his SSC (XI Std.) at Thomas Baptista High School in Vasai where the medium of instruction was Marathi. He subsequently graduated in Science from Patkar College Goregaon. Master Ossie returned to India in 1983 and pursued a BEd degree from St. Xavier's Academy at Churchgate.

Master Ossie taught for two years at Fr. Agnelo Ashram, Bandra and then at Our Lady of Nazareth School, Bhayandar. While an apprentice teacher at St. Stanislaus he was absorbed into the school in 1986 at the age of 37 and served the school for 21 years till 2007. He taught Maths and Science to Std. VIII to X. He also taught Value Education, General Knowledge and Environment Studies.

As a teacher Master Ossie quickly learnt that one is always learning while teaching. He learnt to use teaching methods that were appropriate for specific students, be they gifted learners or slow learners. One favorite memory of Master Ossie, which he thoroughly enjoyed, was preparing the laboratories and conducting experiments in the three Labs of the school.

Master Ossie saw first hand why St. Stanislaus was so special. He experienced how the school offered scope even for the marginalized, downtrodden and the challenged learner. Free extra classes were held for the economically weak as well as those with poor academic performance. He saw compassion being practiced while he was at St. Stanislaus.

At St. Stanislaus, Master Ossie would like to see a change in the attitude and greater commitment from the teaching staff. He would like to see better staff supervision and evaluation. He would also like to see a drastic improvement in the discipline of the students.

Master Ossie feels the school must do more to implement current plans be they academic or others and not allow such plans be just on paper. He feels the school must restrict co-curricular and extra-curricular activities as students lose focus on their studies. A one-day event involves two weeks of preparation/distraction prior to the event.

Master Ossie would like to see St. Stanislaus prosper academically. He would like to see the school succeed while implementing their plans and also reflect on failures.

Master Ossie is content in his retirement but is also very active. He spends 3-4 hours daily studying the new syllabus. He enjoys going for long walks. He is an excellent cook and also enjoys watching TV and reading the newspapers.

One serious challenge in his retirement is how he adapts to retired life. He would like to now focus on how to enjoy life itself. His favorite dishes include Chicken Tandoori and biryani. He likes to listen to music which relaxes him, meeting up and chatting with friends and close relatives.
