SSESA visits Gnanmata School, Uplat 31- August 2014

On behalf of SSESA, Ronald Mascarenhas, Charles Dias, Royce D’Silva and Terence de Souza visited the UPLAT campus, run by the Jesuit community, on 31st August, 2014. They interacted with Fr. Malcolm Netto (In-charge of the campus) and Fr. Joachim Tellis.

Besides regular classrooms for education of the tribal students, the Uplat campus is also equipped with a modern computer lab powered by a generator and an inverter donated by SSESA.  The campus has a basketball court and a 400 meters track playground used for field events.

The Uplat campus widely uses solar energy for various purposes to decrease operational expenses. They have a solar water heater, a solar array panel for lighting the campus compound and even a solar unit for cooking.
The Uplat Fathers rear a variety of poultry like Ducks and different species of Fowl which help provide them a continuous supply of Eggs. They also breed rabbits and pigeons and even cultivate pulses, fruits and vegetables like Lady Finger, Drumstick, Rice, Tamarind, Jambul, Love Apple and Guava.

They have recently ventured into fish farming as well and hope to have a plentiful supply of fish too. The produce from all these in-house endeavours helps cut costs and nourishes approximately 150 boarders in the campus.

The small structure that housed some of the classrooms is in the process of being demolished and a new building is being put up for the SSC secondary section, at a cost of approximately `3 crore. This is being financed by St. Peter’s Church and St. Mary’s School. They are looking in all directions to raise funds to assist with the cost of construction.

We donated a sum of Rs 50,000 on behalf of SSESA, which has been associated with the Uplat project and has supported it for years. Further generous contributions from SSESA members towards cost of construction of the new building and running of the project would help immensely.
