Master Dev Sharma – A man who influenced so many of us is perhaps the undisputed heavyweight champion of St. Stanislaus High School.

Age has not withered the heart or soul of this veteran. Having spent thirty years at Stanislaus High he finally hung up his boots in 2000 retiring as its Supervisor of the School. Who can forget the ‘Jodi’ of Master Sharma and Master Rai – His love for Pan – His trademark Silver Metal Belt and Black Boots? And for so many of us who were on that unforgettable trip to Nepal in the 80’s. He remains until today a beautiful part of many of our school years.

The Activist that he is, Sharma Sir was already aware about our Healthcare Project. He expressed concern that our target was only one lakh, He said son; I think you need to raise more than one lakh rupees for this program to cover the many existing/retired teachers? As usual, he is right on the money but as another wise man has said, ‘Success comes in Baby Steps’.

Anecdotes, Memories began to flow as the hour went by - Sharma Sir provided us valuable feedback and wished us great success in our endeavor. In his inimitable style, he left us with these last words.

SHE DESERVES OUR SUPPORT: Teacher Rose D'sa

Teacher Rose D’sa

Teacher Rose D’sa was born in Nerul in Goa on 11th November 1927 and the family moved to Karachi. In 1944 the family moved to Bombay..

Teacher Rose completed her matriculation from St. Joseph’s Convent Bandra. She started her Senior secondary Teachers Training at St. Sebastian Goan High School and completed the training at Carmel Convent in Bandra.

Teacher Rose began teaching at 22 years at St. Sebastian School which was located across St. Stanislaus. She taught at this free school for ten years. The school was meant for the poor and no fees were charged. When St. Sebastian closed down the then Principal Fr.Casale absorbed her into St. Stanislaus in 1961. Teacher Rose taught till 1985 completing 24 years of service at St. Stanislaus.

Teacher Rose is fondly remembered as a kind and genteel teacher. She taught all subject including Games but excluding PT, Marathi and Drawing. She was Class teacher of Stds. III and IV

Teacher Rose took up teaching because she loved children and she enjoyed interacting with them. She is unmarried and lives in Bandra with her brother Joachim who has retired.

Teaching has given Teacher Rose a sense of fulfillment. She firmly believes that no child should be left behind. She held special classes for students who were economically weak and those with poor academic performance.

St. Stanislaus to Teacher Rose was an extension of her home where the staff was like family. The atmosphere in the staff room was beautiful and homily and the secondary and primary teachers were always together.

Teacher Rose thinks St. Stanislaus is special because at the time the school cared for the welfare of the teachers at school as well as at home. The school was loyal and caring to the teachers and the teachers had a sense of belonging.

Some things Teacher Rose would have like to see changed at St. Stanislaus are the reduction in the size of classes so that the teacher could give special attention to both the slow and quick learner.

She would have preferred if the school switched to green boards instead of black boards and the writing chalk that affected the eyes and throats of teachers was replaced with a healthier alternative. She feels the school should keep the students connected with the happenings in the world even in the lower classes. She feels education should not be one-dimensional and students must not be isolated from present day realities. She always shrived to inculcate human values and courtesy in her students

Teacher Rose strongly feels the school must discourage learning by rote and must encourage students to think. Free expression by students must not be suppressed and students must be encouraged to speak out.

Some things Teacher Rose wishes the school can do are
1. The School sensitizes students to the plight of their less fortunate fellow students.
2. Teach students to think of and help fellow students.
3. Discourage labeling of students which is disabling. Tags like “clumsy boy” or “duffer” can scar the child for life.

At 80 Teacher Rose is still very active with her Prayer Group and Small Christian Community. She regularly visits the hospital bound and the house bound with her group. Presently teacher Rose faces serious challenges daily while managing her daily life particularly the cost of the numerous medications she has to buy all with her meager pension of Rs 1880 per month. In spite of these difficulties he is always cheerful.

Teacher Rose is fond of chicken souffles. She also likes a good old Irish stew. Her hobby is collecting Books of quotations. She likes to embellish the cards she sends her friends and relatives with decorations and quotations.

End of an Era-Joe RIP

We regret to inform you that Joe Maumkel passed away on July 16th 2007. His funeral service was held on July 17th 2007 at 4.15pm at St. Peters Church Bandra.

In 1947 Kippary Alphonse Maumkel arrived to work at St. Stanislaus at the age of 17. The Spanish Jesuits at the time found his name a tongue twister and started referring to him as Joe, Joseph being his father's name.

Joe was fondly known as Dr.Joe for his skill while attending to our wounds or administering us a tetanus injections when we journeyed through St. Stanislaus High School . He will also be remembered for bringing the world to us through Visual Instructions (VI) in the school hall.

He was a simple man who served St. Stanislaus for 60 years doing these seemingly simple tasks with a smile.

The Legacy of the St. Stanislaus Staff Healthcare Initiative belongs to Joe. We thank Dr. Joe for providing us the inspiration to do good.

May Golden Joe's noble soul rest in eternal Peace...and his dedication be a becon for all ...he was an enigma... a true Stanislite...BORN FOR GREATER THINGS

The Evergreens

Dear Stanislites,

We the Ex-Teachers of St. Stanislaus are happy to call ourselves “The Evergreens”. There is a lesson if you recall on “The Evergreens”. We are bestowed with a similar Blessing.

From the snaps you see all of us have gladly welcomed two Teachers who retired this year. Teacher Maria D'souza (Secondary) and Teacher Eugene de Souza (Primary).

We love to date, chat and eat healthy all in two hours of gathering off and on. We bubble with laughter and life. We forget our aches, pains and inabilities. We find great joy in meeting and recalling past moments at St. Stanislaus. Hilarious are we, always assuring one another that we are there for U.

We thanks two Stanislites for sponsoring our Teachers Day lunch at “Barbeque Nation”, Bandra. We the Golden girls feasting on the Golden Goose. Lucky Dip; made some winsome. But a memento was given to each one to take home uplifting the spirit.

It is at these times we realize how lucky we are to have our students who still care. Thank You for your thoughtfulness while sponsoring our Medical Insurance last year. We are gratefull that you will continue your support this year too. It is said Bloom where you are planted; We say a little prayer for each one of you to bloom where ever you are. We returned home with energy, enthusiasm and a silent prayer....
